So, you’ve been using Sign Language to communicate with your baby. You’ve been modeling it consistently, using it as a part of natural conversation, and in the correct context. But your baby still isn’t signing back and you’re super eager for them to start responding.
Learning languages takes time!
Learning to speak takes some time and sign language is no different. Your baby might not sign back until they’re between 9 to 12 months old, but they can understand signs long before they are signing back. The waiting period may seem endless, but they have to understand the sign for “milk” or “more” before they can intentionally sign it back. It’s important to continue to be consistent and patient with your baby as they absorb the language being used around them.
How can I tell if my baby understands my signs?
While babies may not sign back, they are still reacting to your signs. For example, your baby might stop crying when you sign “bed” because they know they’re about to go down for a nap. Or they might look up at the sky if you sign “airplane.” Your baby will give you lots of clues when they understand your signs. You just have to look for them!
Should I just give up?
No! Don’t give up! Kids tend to start signing back between 9-12 months old, but don’t fret if your child is more than 12 months old and still not doing it. Every kid learns at a different pace, and your baby will eventually get there. You’re excited for your baby to be able to communicate with you and you’re starting to get frustrated that it’s not clicking, but it will. Just be patient! If you’re consistently using all the right signs in the right contexts, your baby will pick it up. Be patient, keep putting in effort, and make it fun!
